More than 400 varieties of fantastics fish glint like ornaments of gold in the iridescent waters of the sheltered lagoons, providing hours of enchantmenf for snorkelers and scuba divers. On many of the atolls you can visit black pearl farms and fish parks inside the lagoons, take boat tours to visit the various motu islets and picnic under the black-eyed gaze of the white fairy tern. You may also be invited to join in the volleyball and soccer games played by the villagers. You can go along on fishing expeditions, hunt for tiny shells to string into pretty necklaces, learn to weave hats, mats and baskets from palm fronds, and eat delicious seafoods direct from the shell while standing on a Technicolor reef. In the evening you can sit beside the Paumotu musicians under a starlit sky. You can gaze at the Southern Cross as you listen to melodic island tunes being played on guitars and ukuleles. Their songs tell of old gods and heroes, the spirits of sharks and fish, destructive hurricanes, people lost at sea, shipwrecks on the treacherous reef, vahines and l'amour.
More than two dozen of these atolls have airstrips and regular air service from Tahiti, and several inter-island trading schooners transport supplies and passengers. The following atolls offer either international class hotels, small hotels, pensions, houses or a room in family homes, where guests can find simple accommodations. Water and electricity may be limited to certain hours. This archipelago is rapidly being developed, with airline telephone service now reaching even the most remote atolls.

The magnificent turquoise lagoon of Rangiroa attracts adventurers from all comers of the world. Jet-setters from Italy, fun-seekers from Brazil, scuba divers from Japan and Americans in search of tranquillity all find here the perfect ingredients for a vacation away from it all.Rangiroa is just a 55-minute flight from Tahiti, with convenient connections from Bora Bora, Manihi, and even Nuku Hiva. The distance of 360 Km (223 miles) from Papeete is an overnight cruise by inter-island ship.
Rangiroa, also called Rairoa, means long or vast sky in the Paumotu dialect. Its coral ring contains more than 240 motu islets, separated by at least 100 very shallow hoa channels to from the largest atoll in the Southern Hemisphere. Two deep and wide passes allow ships to enter into the lagoon, where a vast inland sea measures approximately 70 Km (43 miles) long by 26 Km (16 miles) wide, covering a distance of 1,020 square Km (393 square miles). The land itself, almost without substance, could be a mirage, with motus of graceful leaning palms scattered along the encircling reef, vanishing into the distance beyond the horizon.
Rangiroa’s lagoon is world famous for unsurpassed scuba diving in the warmest and clearest water you can dream of. Favorite excursions include « shooting the pass », where hundreds of fish, moray eels and sharks swim beside and below you, swept along by the strong currents. You can view this exciting spectacle aboard a glassbottom boat, or jump into the water with mask, snorkel, fins or even scuba diving bottles. Vacation memories are also made aboard a pedal boat, paddling an outrigger canoe, sailing inside the lagoon, line and drag fishing. Boat excursions take you to the pink sand beach of Vahituri, while admiring the fossilized coral formations on Reef Island, and during a full day picnic trip across the lagoon to « Blue Lagoon » on Taeo’o.
The villages of Avatoru and Tiputa are located on the nothern coast, where most of the 1,913 inhabitants reside. The airport and most of the hotels and pensions are located between the Tiputa pass and Avatoru, a 45-minute boat ride apart. You can explore Avatoru village to the Tiputa pass by bicycle, mini-moke or « fun car ». Tiputa village is easily discovered in a short walk. Overlooking the Tiputa pass is Ohutu Point, complete with covered picnic tables, benches and shades trees. This is a favorite destination in late afternoon, when dolphins can often be seen playing in the swift current that flows through the pass, between the open ocean and the interior lagoon.
Among this wealth of scenery is an attractive selection of international resort hotels, small hotels with thatched roof bungalows and simple family owned pensions with fresh lagoon fish on the menu. Across the lagoon from the villages are small hotels and camps where you can walk on beaches as remote as Robinson Crusoe’s. Live a sauvage simplified life with lots of fresh food from the reef and lagoon. You can even catch your own dinner if you choose ! Here you’ll have a newfound reunion with nature. And trade winds to dance in the coconut palms.

Tikehau is a South Sea island dream come true, where you will feel that you have been born into paradise. In this haven of seclusion, less than an hour's flight from Tahiti and just 20 minutes by plane from Rangiroa, you will delight in the unspoiled beauty and quiet ways of this charming little atoll. Most of the 400 inhabitants live in Tuherahera village on the southern end of Tikehau, where small boats can enter the lagoon through a pass in the reef. The almost circular interior lagoon is 26 km. (16 miles) wide, bordered by white sand beaches and graceful coconut palms that punctuate the blue sky. Tikehau's lagoon is rich with sea life, whose forms and hues defy even the most active imagination. You'll see brain coral and stag horn corals, in a myriad of shapes and colors. Soft corals and sponges, tubeworms with lively colored feathered tips. Mother-of-pearl oysters, reef clams, crawn of thorn starfish, anemones and a whole parade of brightly painted fiish. You can wiew the beauty of the fish and submarine gardens through a glass bottom boat or scuba dive with qualified dive masters. Take a boat to Motu Ohihi, which is surrounded by hoa channels and has a pink sand beach. Go to Motu Puarua and Oeoe, where snowy white fairy terns and noddy birds nest. Visit fish parks and pearl farms. Take your choice of motu islets for a memorable picnic. Bike through the coconut groves to the rose-colored reef and take a guided land tour to the village and surrounding area. You can fish by line or spear or join the villagers in a tug-of-war with the rolling surf as fishermen haul in a seine heavy with fish. The air in Tikehau is laden with perfume from the pandanus, tahinu, puatea and tiare kahaia flowers that grow beside the long, clean beaches. When you finally leave the island, you'll have an odd sensation when you breathe plain air once more.
