The magical quality of Huahine is felt almost from the first moment you arrive in this very special place. There is a certain color and lightness of the air that inspires poets, writers and artists to interpret their emotions. You'll notice immediately that the people are happy.
Huahine lies 175 km. (110 miles) northwest of Tahiti in the Leeward Society islands, visible from Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora. It's just a 35 minute flight from Tahiti, or three hours by air-conditioned rapid launch.
The two islands that comprise Huahine-Nui and Huahine-Iti (big and little Huahine) are connected by a bridge and have a combined surface area of 73 square km. (28 square miles). Legend claims that the two islands were once united and the isthmus was formed when Hiro, the great warrior and god of thieves, sliced his canoe through the island, dividing it and producing two beautiful bays on each side of the isthmus. Hiro's paddle and parts of his anatomy are stone formations seen in the cliffs overlooking the channel.
The road winds 32 km. (20 miles) around the two islands, passing through the little villages of Fare, Maeva, Faie and Fitii on Huahine Nui, and Haapu, Parea, Mahuti, Tefarerii and Maroe on Huahine Iti.
The modest homes of the 5,411 inhabitants are surrounded by banana, breadfruit, papaya and mango trees.
The historic village of Maeva, built beside Lake Fauna Nui, was the traditional headquarters of Huahine. Restored Tahitian marae temples, prehistoric villages and stone fish weirs lend clues to a civilization that existed at least 1,000 years ago. The Fare Pote'e, an oval-shaped traditional meeting house at the edge of Lake Fauna Nui, is a museum that tells the story of the royal village, where kings and chiefs lived and worshipped side by side.
All around both islands are plantations of vanilla, coffee and taro.
There are groves of breadfruit, mango, banana and papaya. Trees of purau and kapok grow among tangled masses of untamed wilderness. Swiftly flowing streams make their way from their mountain origins, winding through the mape forests to form delightful pools for fresh water shrimp. And onward they flow, to merge with the warm multicolored waters of the lagoon.
You'll enjoy wandering in and out of the shops in the main village of Fare. You can drive a car around the island, take le truck to a distant village, ride a horse along a white sand beach or bicycle down a paved road. Activities are well organized in Huahine, and knowledgeable guides will show you the two islands by mini-van, 4-wheel drive vehicle, by helicopter or horseback. Deep sea fishing, scuba diving and day sailing are also available. Outrigger canoe tours will take you to deserted beaches, secluded coves and uninhabited islets, with a picnic on the motu.
Whatever you do in Huahine, you will feel very close to the richness of the earth. And you will also feel the « magic ».
