« Im going to Bora Bora » is a phrase that will bring envy and longing to the hearts of your friends when you tell them that you are going to visit the most beautiful island in the world.
Be prepared the first glimpse of Bora Bora is love a first sight. Sailors, poets, adventurers, honeymooners and other romantics have claimed this little island as their own. And so will you.
Bora Bora lies 259 Km (155 miles) northwest of Tahiti in the Leeward Society Islands. Your first sight of the island will probably be from the window of an Air Tahiti ATR-72 turbojet, at the end of a 45-minute flight from Tahiti, or from the deck of a sailboat or an inter-island ferry boat.
An artists palette of blues and greens greets your eye. Aquamarine. Lapis lazuli. Turquoise. Cobalt. Periwinkle. Sapphire. Emerald. Jade. Ultramarine. Indigo. Youll love counting the shades of color in these diaphanous waters. Tiny reef-islets called motu ring the opalescent waters like exotic little havens cast adrift.
Coconut palms seem to quiver like a mirage on the horizon, and a confection of white sand beaches dips down into the crystal lagoon.
Historians believe that the proud, brave Polynesian settlers first sailed their double-hulled voyaging canoes through the Teavanui Pass, the only navigable break in the coral wall, sometime during the ninth century. They named the island Vavau, « First Born », and claimed Motu Tapu as their sacred islet. The name was later changed to Porapora and when Captain James Cook visited in 1777, he recorded the islands name as BolaBola. The American Armed Forces who were stationed on the island in World War II called it Bora Bora.
Its fun and easy to explore Bora Boras main island, which is only 10 Km (6,2 miles) long and 4 Km (2,5 miles) wide. A partially paved road circles the coastline, winding 29 Km (18 miles) through the colorful villages of Vaitape, Faanui and Anau. Youll see little settlements of modest fares with big, bountiful flower-filled gardens, the homes of Bora Bora’s 8,927 inhabitants.
You can stop to visit marae stone temples at archaeological sites, and you will see old Army bunkers and cannon left over from World War II, when 5,000 Americans made their « friendly invasion » on Bora Bora. You can hop aboard a guided tour bus or explore the island yourself. Jeep safaris will take you up to the rugged interior of the island, where you can photograph the seascape far below.
You can also admire the beauty of Bora Bora from aloft in a helicopter ride, or soar above the lagoon in a parasail.
Bora Boras lagoon will be your natural center of interest. You can snorkel inside a fascinating aquarium. Paddle an outrigger canoe to a lovely deserted islet and leave the world behind. Or join a group for a boat excursion around the island, with a barbecue picnic on a motu. Ride a glass bottom boat or Aquascope. Peer down into the seascape where the big fish live and schools of graceful manta ray are seen in the rippled light. Explore the living coral reef. Youll find spiny sea urchins, scurrying crabs and the tridacna maxima reef claim. Step down into the lagoon for a shark-feeding show or help lasso a « trained » black-tip shark in the pass. Scuba dive in the lagoon or outside the reef, and marvel at the magnificence of Nature. Feel the exhilaration of the trade winds as you skim over the water on an outrigger sailing canoe, windsurf, sunfish, hobie cat or sailing yacht. See huge turtles swim up for air as you circle the island aboard a jet-ski, lagoon-jet, speedboat or motorized pirogue. Drink a Happy Hour cocktail and watch a stunning sunset from a spacious catamaran. Go fishing, plain or fancy. Throw a line overboard, jump in with a spear gun or troll for mahi mahi, yellowfin tuna, marlin and swordfish in the deep blue sea. Or simply feed the lagoon fish from the hotel pier and watch the colorful show as they come to eat.
« Anyone who has ever been there wants to go back », James Michener wrote of Bora Bora. Once you have seen Bora Bora, you too, will want to return for a week, a year, or perhaps for a lifetime.
